Constituents:

Seeds yields. Leaf juice contains vitamin ‘C’ Seeds yield a red dye which contains a narcotic odour resembling that of Cannabis Indica; also it contains harmalol, harmoline, harmine and harmol.

Action:  

Leaf juice is Sudorific, Emmenagogue, and Anthelmintic and the seed are Narcotic, Alterative, Lactogogue, Anodyne Hypnotic.

Uses:

Powdered seeds are used  as anthelmintic  against tapeworms. The red dye is extracted from the seeds. This is used in the leather industry and also used in cosmetics The decoction of the seeds is given in amenorrhoea.

இதனை பெரும்பாலும் சாயம் வடிக்கவே பயன்படுத்துவர். இதன் சாயம் தோல் பதனிடுதலிலும், பட்டுத் தொழிலிலும், அழகு சாதனப் பொருட்களிலும் பயனாகிறது.

மருத்துவத்தில் முதுகுத் தண்டு விலிக்கும், ஆஸ்துமாவுக்கும், ஹிஸ்டிரியாவுக்கும், கல்லடைப்புக்கும் இது பயனாகிறது. இதன் எண்ணெய் ‘வலி நீக்கியாகும். இதன் விதையின் குடிநீர் அருந்து வதால் பால் சுரப்பதுடன் மாதவிடாயின் பொழுது இரத்தப் போக்கை அதிகப்படுத்துகிறது.
