Constituents:

Root contains plumbagin. This is present in all varieties of plumbago species.

Action:

 Stimulant, Diaphoretic, Stomachic, Rubefacient. Anti-periodic, Abortifacient. Vesicant Sialagogue. Plumbagin set up the irritation of the skin.

Uses:

There are three types of plumbago namely, black, red and white varieties. All the three exhibits same properties. These could be used in treating boils, ulcers,

tumours, rheumatism, bubos, anaemia, piles, cold and abdomi-nal dropsy. Other diseases like rheumatic gout, herpes, venereal ulcers, fever due to the inflammation of lymphs also could be treated with this.

The root and root bark exhibits many medicinal proper-ties. Herpes, leprosy, ringworm, ascites, arthritis, paralysis, and asthma could be treated with this. If taken in large quantity it aborts the pregnancy. This is also used in treating cancers. The mashed fresh root boiled in gingelly oil is used as hair tonic to get relief from migrane and cold. The oil extract of this plant is used in treating rheumatism, arthritis and hemi-plegia.

இதை கொடி வேலி என்றும் கூறுவர். இதில் மூன்று வகை உள்ளது. கருங்கொடி வேலி, செங்கொடி வேலி, வெண் கொடி வேலி. இன்மூன்றின் குணமும் பெரும்பாலும் ஒன்றேயாகும். இந் னால் கட்டி, புண், கழலை; வளிநோய்கள், அரையாப்புக்கட்டி, குத்தல், சோபை, மூலரோகம், உதிரக்கட்டு. நீரேற்றம், பெருவயிறு இவை போகும். மேலும் இதனால் சூலைக்கட்டு, குழிப்புண் கிரந்தி, மேகப்புண், நெறிகரம், நச்சுச் சுரம் முதலியவை நீரும். இதிலிருந்து பிளம்பகோ என்கிற வெண் சத்தைப் பிரித்து எடுக்கி நார்கள்.

இதன் வேரும், வேர்ப்பட்டையும் பல மருத்துவ குணங்களை யுடையது. இது கிரத்தி, குஷ்டம், படர் தாமரை, மகோதரம், வாதம், பாரிசவாயு. ஆஸ்துமா ஆகியவற்றிற்கு குணமளிக்கும். இதை அதிகம் உட்கொள்ள கர்ப்பத்தை சிதைக்கும். புற்றுநோயை குணப்படுத்தும்.

இதன் பச்சை வேரை நசுக்கி எண்ணெயிலிட்டு காய்ச்சி அந்த எண்ணெயை தலைக்குத் தடவி தலைமுழுக்க நீர்ப்பீநசம், தும்மல், தீராத் தலைவலி இவைகள் தீரும்.கொடி வேலித் தைலத்தை சீல்வாதம், பக்கவாதம் இவை கட்டுப் பூச குணமாகும்.
