Constituents:

A volatile essential oil, acorin, a bitter principle in acoretin (choline), calamine (useful dysentery), strach, muscilage, a little of tannin. The dried rhizome yields a neutral yellow. aromatic essential oil having an agreeable odour.

Action:

Root and rhizome are Stimulant, Emetic, Nauseant, Stomachic, Aromatic, Expectorant, Carminative, Antispasmodic, Nervine sedative, Tonic, Stomachic, or Carminative, and also Anti-periodic. The volatile oil is Aromatic and Antiseptic.

Uses:

This is aromatic. The dried ones are commonly available in the shops. An aromatic oil is extracted from this. It acts as an antidote for poisonous bites, more over ulcers, dyspepsia, biliousness, bad breath, phlegmatic dis-orders, cough, liver disorders. filariasis and tape worm could be cured. The powder of this with honey if taken regularly corrects stammering. Indigestion, diarrhoea flatulence, intestinal gas, eczema, periodic fever also could be treated with this. Infusion of this with liquid given to children it cures cough, fever and stomach ache. If this powder is consumed it corrects breathlessness, but if it is consumed in large quantity it produces vomiting and nausea. If it is chewed it increases salivary secretion and cures cough. It is used with catechu as a paste to cure joint pains. Ash of the root with cocoanut oil if applied it cures flatulence. Asa-foetida, atees, long pepper, pepper, dried ginger and myrobalan, are added with the powder. If this mixture is consumed it cures indigestion, rheumatism, diarrhoea due to indigestion and flatulence.

இது ஒருவிதப் பூண்டு. இதன் தண்டு ஏறக்குறைய பெருவிரற் கனமிருக்கும். இது சாம்பல் படிந்த நிறமிருக்கும். இதன் வேருக்கு வசம்பு, பிள்ளை வளர்த்தி என்பது பெயர். இதற்கு ஒருவித மணமுண்டு. இதை உலர்த்திக் கடைகளில் விற்பார்கள். ஊடுருவிப் பாயக்கூடிய வெப்பமும், மணமும் உள்ள ஒருவித எண்ணெய்சத்து (Glucocido acorin) இதிலுண்டு.

வசம்பினால், எல்லா நஞ்சுகள். புண் வகைகள், குன்மம், இரத்த பித்தம், வாய்நாற்றம், சூலை, இருமல், ஈரல் நோய்கள். யானைக்கால், நாடாப்புழு ஆகியவைகள் போகும்.

வசம்புத் தூளைத் தேனில் குழைத்து,விடியற்காலைதோறும் உட்கொண்டுவரின், நாக்குப் பிறழ்சி (இக்குவாய்) நீங்கும். அன்றியும் இது செரியாமை, கழிச்சல், வயிற்றுப் பொருமல், வன்மை யின்மை,லாயு, சொறி சிரங்கு, சுரங்கள், முறை காய்ச்சல் ஆகிய வைகளையும் போக்கும்.

வசம்புடன் அதிமதுரம் கூட்டிக் காய்ச்சிய குடிநீர், பெரும் பாலும் குழந்தைகளுக்குண்டாகிற இருமல், ஈளை, சுரம், வயிற்று வலி இவைகளைப் போக்கும்.

வசம்புப் பொடியை கொஞ்சம் உட்கொள்ள. அகட்டு வாயை அகற்றுவதுடன், நரம்புத் தளர்ச்சியையும் விலக்கும். அதிகமாக உண்டால் வாய்க்குமட்டலையும், வாந்தியைமுண்டாக்கும்.

வசம்புத் துண்டை வாயிலிட்டுச் சுவைக்க,வாய்நீர் பெருகும். வாயில் ஒருவித அனலெழும்பும். ஆனால், தொண்டைக்கம்மல். இருமல் இவற்றைப் போக்கும். விஷக் காற்றால் நோய்கள் பரவுங் காலத்தில் இதை வாயிலிட்டு மெல்லுவது வழக்கம்.

நாட்பட்ட கீல்வாத நோய்களுக்குக் காசிக் கட்டியுடன் வசம்பைச் சேர்த்து நீர் விட்டரைத்துப் பற்றிடலாம்.

வசம்பைச் சுட்டுக் கரியாக்கி, தேங்காய் நெய் அல்லது முத் தெண்ணெயுடன் கலந்து அடிவயிற்றில் பூச வயிற்றுப் பொருமல் நீங்கும்.

வசம்பு, காயம், அதிவிடயம், திப்பிலி, மிளகு, சுக்கு. கடுக்காய்த் தோல் இவைகளைப் பொடி செய்து உள்ளுக்குக் கொடுக்க செரியாமை, வளிநோய்கள், மாந்தக் கழிச்சல், வயிற்றுப் பொருமல் முதலியன நீங்கும்.
