Root contains a glucoside called pierorhizin

Action:

Anti-periodic, Cholagogue, Stomachle, Laxative and Cathartic.

Uses:

This is bitter in taste. This is not advisable to bs consumed by cardiac patients as it has got bad effects  on heart. It reduces the body temperature, The following salts are taken from this: Ceradine, Jervine, Ruby Jervine, Pseudo Jervine, Veratralbine, Veratine. It reduces pulse rate. It is highly toxic, but if used in recommended doses, it is useful in cough, asthma, haematological disorders, juandice and urinery tract infections (U.T.I.)

கடுகு ரோகிணி கைப்புச் சுவையுடையது. இது இருதயத்திற்கு சோர்வுண்டாக்கும்; தாது வெப்பதற்றும். இதிலிருந்து வொடைன் (Cevadine), sir (Jervine), 1 (Ruby jervine), (Pseudo jervine), (Ceradine). வெராட்ரால்பைன் (Veratralbine). வெராடைன் (Veratine) என்னும் உப்புகள் எடுக்கப்படுகின்றன.

தாபசுரம், பிரசவசந்தி (Puerperal eclampsia) நுரையீரல், தாபனரோகம் ஆகிய நோய்களை இது குணப்படுத்தும். நாடி நீவிரத்தையடக்கும். ஆனால், இது ஒரு கொடிய நஞ்சு.

தவிர இது ஆஸ்த்துமா, இரத்த சம்பந்தமான நோய்கள், வெண்குஷ்டம், மஞ்சள் காமாலை, மூத்திரத்தாரை நோய்கள் முதலானவற்றில் உபசரக்காக பயன்படுகிறது.
