Nelumbium speciosum

(N. O. Nymphaeaceae)

Habit:

Aquatic herb

Parts used:

Flowers, filaments, anthers, stalks seeds leaves and roots.

Constituents:

Rhizome and seeds contain resins, metarbin and an alkaloid Nelumbine’.

Action:

Similar to N. alba.

Uses:

Aquatic herb with red flowers. This strengthens the heart. Leaves cure fever, burning of the eyes, hypertension and epilepsy. Tuber cures eye diseases, allergy and flatulence. Seeds are found to be effective in all skin diseases. Honey of this flower cures eye diseases. Roct tuber is powdered and if taken along with cow’s ghee it cures fever. Leaf juice is used in calcination of oysters.

வெண்தாமரையைப் போன்றே நீரில் வளரும். சிலப்பு நிறப் பூக்களையுடையது. செந்தாமரை இருதயத்திற்கு வலிமை தரும். சுரம், கண் எரிச்சல் தீர்க்கும். இரத்தக் கொதிப்பு, காக்கை வலிப்பு ஆகியவற்றிற்கு குணம் தரும். செந்தாமரைக் கிழங்கு தேத்திர தோஷம், சருமத்தடிப்பு, வயிற்றுப்பொருமல், கடுப்பு நீக்கும்.

செந்தாமரையின் விதை சகல ரோகங்களையும் தீர்க்கும். தேன் கண் வியாதிக்கு குணம் தரும். இலைச்சாற்றினால் சங்கு பஸ்ட மாகும். வேர்க்கிழங்கை சூரணித்து பசுநெய்யில் சாப்பிட கடுமை யான சுரம் போகும்.
